So, what are the best practices for that Specifically, I have a waterproof box with the Pi in. Is it better to have a short cable run from the antenna to Pi for low signal loss (I could mount the antenna on the box), or to mount the antenna away from the Pi for low noise Im happy to stick the antenna on the roof somewhere, but not if it isnt worth it. Im running the Pi off a PoE setup, so I can mount the Pi near the antenna or some distance away. Which would be preferable Thoughts 5 comments share save hide report 86 Upvoted This thread is archived New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast Sort by new (suggested) level 1 13 points 1 year ago Mount it so everything above the metal part of the antenna away from parallel metal. So dont mount it on the side of a metal pole or next to a metal wall. It helps a bit if its grounded: the fiberglass may pick up a static electrical charge from the wind. The noise from Ethernet and PoE adaptor cant help, but isnt that bad. Mount the Pi and SDR out of direct sunlight to prevent them from overheating. ![]() Mount the antenna vertically and as high as possible (but not above or near lightning rods). A few feet higher is another mile of reception, if you can see the horizon. The 25 ft cable decrease signal strength and you would receive fewer message as a result, especially from distant planes. I have successfully used a 15 foot USB extension cable, with the filter and SDR mounted right next to the antenna. Keep the Pi somewhere you can access relatively easily, if you should ever need to reinstall it. Play with the antenna placement a bit to see if you can get a better signal on one side of the house versus another. I had my antenna mounted near the top of my chimney, which was slightly taller than the peak of my roof. I moved the antenna inside during hurricane season a while back (I live in Florida and went through Hermine, Irma, and Michael), and actually found the messages and range both increased by moving into the attic. I believe the flashing and rain guard around the chimney might have blocked the signal to the antenna, and moving inside also means I could switch from a wifi dongle to hardwired cat 5 since a lot of my networking gear is also in the attic.
